Overview:
Brayden grew up in the affluent Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois. His home life was unmarred by tragedies or abuse. He was a solid B student who could have been an A student if he had applied himself. Being a good-looking, gifted athlete instilled in him a streak of vanity and an air of arrogance. With his blue eyes and easygoing smile, Brayden is quite the ladies’ man and has a new girl every week. He sometimes comes off as a hothead but is always quick to regain his composure and control.
He has gained a large social media following for his exploration of abandoned urban places. While he explores, he gives a historical overview of each place. He is known to carry a gun, a baton, and mace on his adventures. “Safety first,” as he always says in his videos. He often disregards his own rule by allowing his followers to goad him into stunts that are stupid and dangerous.
Brayden is a lifelong skeptic and disbeliever in the paranormal. His motto is that there’s no mystery that can’t be solved. Even so, he has a lucky charm. He wears a belt with thirteen notches carved into it, which he made with a knife, though he has never revealed their significance. He is often seen running his fingers over the notches, apparently shoring up his confidence as he recites an unheard mantra while moving through some of the more dangerous spots on his explorations. Don’t let him hear you calling that superstition, though. He will be quick to put you in your place and block you.
When Brayden read about The Hyperion on Reddit, a building that only appears once a year and from which no one ever comes back. It sounded like Grade A bullshit to him. He clicked the link to a site called The Hyperion Tracker, and within an hour, he received his first goading text message:
TH: Greetings, Mr. Winchell. The Hyperion has been looking for you.
For almost a month, he exchanged text messages back and forth with an entity claiming to be The Hyperion. He shared the exchange with his followers on all his social media outlets, swearing he would solve the mystery. Before long, his followers began to goad him with virtual chants like:
Do it!
Find that place!
Show them who’s boss.
On October 31st, Brayden received his final text from The Hyperion.
TH: Don’t worry, Mr. Winchell. We’ll find you.
It is on that night, at 3 am, that Brayden Winchell found and entered The Hyperion…
